For a lot of us guys that didn't play as kids, the big thing is finding the right group of guys to play with. Luckily I've got a group on Sunday mornings where I'm challenged without slowing anyone up. A lot of the rinks around my area the high schoolers are often a dominant feature of any drop-in.

@ BB - Oh i can only imagine the costs. I know when i have kids, i am going to get them into hockey (boy or girl). The expense is extreme, but i think it is a sport that teaches so much. You are right though, hockey is the most expensive sport this side of golf.

@ Evan - I can imagine playing at that level it gets even more expensive.

@ Paul - Glad to hear it. That was the point of the post. If i got one more person into playing, it would have been time well spent. I was an inline player for a handful of years and then made the transition to ice. I haven't been on rollerblades in almost 2 years. I love skating on ice and never want to go back to asphalt.

Very timely article I actually just sent an email off to our local rink about their upcoming program. I attended the USA vs Norway game in Vancouver and I've been a lifelong hockey fan and I thought it was time. I used to play in an inline league for several years but it disbanded so need to make the switch to ice. Fortunately a lot of my original gear will work just need to defunkify it. But need to get some skates. Great post you never know what you're going to find around the PF blogosphere. Maybe someday we'll meet up on the ice!

My brother and a bunch of buddies played in HS - and it wasn't cheap then either. The school didn't support the team much (graduated in 1999 not sure if things have changed) so it cost my parents well over a grand even back then for a HS sport.

My son was on a traveling hockey team when he was young (8-10 years old). It was quite a hit to the family budget. If we had a game two hours or more away at 7:30 a.m. the family would get a hotel nearby. Add the travel costs of gas, food and lodging to the usual hockey expenses and it was really too much for our budget to spare.

I was relieved when he wanted to play little league baseball and pop warner football. He couldn't do that and hockey due to the overlap of seasons. The new sports were MUCH cheaper!
